Sofya Smallwood

I started my portfolio project by looking at the themes of nostalgia and childhood. I had moved back to my childhood home this year and I started to notice the little things around the house that reminded me of my childhood – old toys, stickers on the wall of my childhood bedroom, story books etc. This then inspired me to explore the themes of change and loss, and the effect they have, whether that be the loss of family or the loss of innocence. Exploring that theme is how I came up with most of the ideas for my portfolio. I came to the realisation that the childhood version of myself that grew up in this house was completely different to the 20-year-old version, and yet they were still very similar to each other. I then began to work with old photos, combining them with current photos, and experimenting with different media. The ideas that I was exploring were quite broad, so I was able to work in a range of different ways and produce a varied set of finished pieces.
