This year I explored themes to do with nature. I made this decision because of the experience I had with drawing and painting this subject matter. For primary sauce work it was also easy for me to access. We as humans are starting to have a growing enthusiasm for nature with the rise of climate change awareness and activism.
For my portfolio project I used nature to contrast with human beauty and the standards we set for each other and ourselves. We all seem to think nature is beautiful yet we take it away to build cities and other structures. I saw a parallel in this with how we do so much to our face and body in order to become “beautiful”.
This led me to explore what comes with being female as unrealistic beauty standards disproportionately affects women and girls. What had been going on in the news has also affected the work I was doing. Issues like this had already been circling around in my head before the murder of Sarah Everard because well I was born female it’s pretty much a given that this something I was already to aware of.
Some work I would do more for the meaning others just the way it looks.
Enjoy!
